The military formation is a state army and is unique because it is the only state army and one of the oldest army in Malaysia.〔 It is under the control of the Sultan of Johor. Its headquarters are located at Bukit Timbalan, Johor Bahru, Johor.〔 Today the force performs mainly ceremonial functions. For example, the military formation's passing-out parade to mark the end of training for its 61 recruits was held in full tradition for the first time since 1947.
